Correcting Imperfections with A Dental Bonding Procedure

When you’re at the dentist, it is not uncommon to hear terms being used that you are unfamiliar with. You should never be afraid to ask your dentist is you have any questions or are unsure about anything, but it never hurts to learn about certain procedures before sitting in the chair.

In many cases, patients are confused or uncertain about what a tooth bonding is. Like dental crowns or veneers, tooth bonding is a process that provides a cosmetic solution to a tooth that is discolored, chipped, fractured, or otherwise damaged.

When Would A Dental Bonding Be Considered?

Having a bright, blemish-free smile can really change the way you present yourself and give you the opportunity to make a radiant first impression every time. Imperfections in the mouth can cause insecurities or cause you to feel insecure or uncomfortable when smiling or conversing with someone. Dental bonding can be an excellent solution to that problem and are an ideal option for patients who have any of the following:

  • Chipped, cracked, or fractured teeth
  • Misshapen, disproportionate, or crooked teeth
  • Discolored teeth
  • Gaps or spaces between the teeth
  • Unusually short teeth
  • Decayed teeth (like cavities)

In addition to these, composite resin tooth bonding can protect roots that have been exposed due to receding gums, as well as be used as an alternative to amalgam fillings.

This treatment option tends to be less sturdy than porcelain veneers and less stain resistant than dental crowns, but it is often the most cost-effective and is ideal for patients who are not trying to correct an extensive amount of damage. If you are unsure of an ideal option for you, feel free to schedule a consultation with Dr. Beaufils of Beaufils Dental.

What Can Be Expected From the Procedure?

Unlike veneers, little preparation is needed before a dental bonding procedure. A resin that most closely matches the color of your teeth will be chosen and the surface of the target tooth will be roughened before the bonding material is applied. Once the putty-like resin is molded to the desired tooth, an ultraviolet light is introduced to harden the material. Once it’s hardened, Dr. Beaufils will trim, shape, and polish the bonding material to make it blend into the rest of the mouth almost flawlessly. Overall, the entire procedure takes about 30 to 60 minutes and can be done in one visit.

Typically, bonding material lasts around 10 years, depending on how well you care for them. While they don’t require any special care, it is important that you refrain from putting unnecessary strain on them by chewing ice, biting fingernails, chewing pen caps, or opening wrappers with your mouth. As always, you should be observing regular dental hygiene practices including brushing and flossing at least twice a day.
